Popeye Shark Model

I got a gift yesterday from my collector buddy and Fleischer fanatic Ryan Englade - an original Charlie Thorson shark model from the Popeye cartoon Females is Fickle . Thanks Ryan!!

Character designer Charlie Thorson worked briefly for the Fleischer Studio in Miami and among his accomplishments was the design of Popeye's nephews. There's a book on him that was published years ago - it's worth getting a copy.

The 1940 Popeye model drawn by Charlie Thorson.

Here's a bear model from a previous post that was was designed by Charlie. And below is a clip of the shark's brief appearance -

Thanks Shawn. If I only had a way to shut out the internet freaks while keeping the blog public...

Great model sheet. Thanks for mentioning that book. I remember seeing it for sale somewhere online and totally forgot about it. That's going right back up to the top of my must get book list.

It's really interesting how he adapted so well to the styles of various studios - Fleischer, Disney, and Warners are as different animals as they come. This post made me realize at least one falsehood that I've read on the Internet - that Thorson didn't design the Ward Kimball native in Friz Freleng's Hiawatha's Rabbit Hunt; how could he if he was in Miami? Conjecture never ceases sadly.

There are a bunch of errors in the book. I identified the cartoons for some original art and model sheets (through Jerry) for someone at the University of Manitoba. I'm hoping that the author (who teaches/or taught there) will fix the errors and republish the book with the added artwork.

I'd really love to see a complete collection of all of the Fleischer model sheets for Popeye.

Yeah - me too. They're out there - coveted by collectors who wish to keep them hidden from view and have them stored within their bunkers miles below the Earth's crust.

Damn those coveting collectors. They must learn to love it and not covet.

Amen brother. A special ops squad should be formed to rescue that art.

Hey bob I'm a beginner animator and I really love all of your work that I've seen. What would you recommend for a beginner in terms of drawing and animating? I've been doing life drawing and studying lots of classic cartoons to get drawing techniques down. I have Animator's Survival Kit and starting to try out walk cycles and bouncing balls and what not. Anything else you'd recommend for learning technical stuff or any books?

And thanks for all the info about Fleischer cartoons!

Hey David - I'm doing a post that's related to your question. It will be up by the end of the week.
