Graham Place Teaser
Graham Place's animation from 'Stealing Ain't Honest'.
The Tom Johnson unit really started to change the personality of Bluto when Johnson finally started to handle the Popeyes in 1939. This is one of the first scenes (in Johnson's second Popeye short) to show the change to a less gruff, more comedic character (Bluto might cry before this after Popeye's beaten the crap out of him, but never before simply in frustration), so it's interesting that Tom picked Place to animate this scene, which requires Bluto to do a lot more demonstrative acting than what had normally been called for.
Place later became an animation director and left Famous in 1946.
ReplyDeleteLooking fwd. to this. Place was one of those guys who seemed to move between every crew at Fleischers.
ReplyDeleteDid Blutto say "This sucks!" in this clip?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like he said 'shucks'.
